Where most New Jersey kitchens land

Semi-custom is the level where the kitchen is drawn to the room instead of the room being arranged around stock widths. The cabinets are still factory-built from a catalogue, which keeps the price well below a custom shop, but the catalogue is deep — dozens of door styles, painted and stained finishes, species, glass, modifications — and every box is made to the size on the drawing. Most of the kitchens in our portfolio are semi-custom.

The lines and what each is good at

Fabuwood — the best seller

Framed Allure in six door styles with stocked Signature colours and made-to-order Select and Designer palettes, plus the frameless Illume and Ovela lines with slab and wide-shaker fronts. Plywood boxes, Blum hardware, a limited lifetime warranty and a plant in Newark. The Desert Oak kitchen with a fluted island and the Livingston Dove and Timber kitchen show the range.

Adornus Designer — frameless semi-custom

A full-access ¾-inch plywood box with hardwood mortise-and-tenon doors, eight door styles from the Hampton shaker to the ogee Blakeney and the Manhattan slab, twenty Sherwin-Williams paints plus White Oak, SALICE soft-close hardware and width, height and depth modifications.

NOMA, Kith & Eudora, St. Martin

Three American semi-custom plants for customers who have outgrown the Fabuwood door list: NOMA's edited modern palette in Cressona, PA; Kith's thirty-four doors and finish library from Alabama, with Eudora for frameless; St. Martin's built-to-order program with white-oak stains, priced with Shiloh.

Shiloh and Eclipse — the custom look

Forty door styles, nine species including rift and quarter-sawn white oak, twenty-two standard paints plus any Sherwin-Williams colour, glazes and distressing, and nine constructions from standard overlay to beaded inset. Eclipse is the same company's frameless line with acrylic, laminate and veneer slab fronts. The Soft White and Sable kitchen, the navy-island kitchen with Room Therapy and the Maplewood walnut island are Shiloh.

What semi-custom changes in the drawing

• Sizes to the inch. Fillers shrink, the island fits the aisle, the pantry meets the ceiling.
• Colour. A Sherwin-Williams colour on the island, a stain on the hood, two tones in one line.
• Details. Glass and reeded-glass uppers, fluted and reeded panels, appliance panels, custom hoods, furniture feet, open shelves in the species.
• Construction choices. Framed or frameless, and in Shiloh, overlay or inset.
